Wilbur Smith

Alex Wilbur Smith (Wilbur), 85 of White Lake, North Carolina, passed away on May 31, 2017 at New Hanover Regional Hospital in Wilmington, NC.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 3:00 pm at White Lake Baptist Church. Burial will follow the funeral at Smith Cemetery (Mote Road) in Harrels.

Wilbur was born in Bladen County on October 3, 1931. He was married to Marjorie Watson for more than 40 years and know to everyone as “Papa.”  Wilbur worked for Veeder-Root for 39 years and built piers around White Lake for many years. He enjoyed fishing with his grandkids, meals with family and friends, and just loved to live life to the fullest. He was also actively involved in Woodmen of the World, a longtime member and Deacon of White Lake Baptist Church, and volunteered at the Camp Clearwater Chapel.

Wilbur is survived by son, Blair Felder; Daughter-In-Law, Dana McDuffie (Brett); two wonderful grandchildren, Alex Felder and Blair Elizabeth Felder; 3 Brothers: Robert (Katie), Hal (Betty), Larry (Ann), 4 Sisters: Edna New, Mary Granger, Hazel Chadwick (J.C.), Peggy Poole; 35 nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by wife, Marjorie; parents, Eddie and Helen C. Smith; brothers, Elmer, E.J., James, and Earl.

Visitation will be held Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 6pm to 8pm at Carter Funeral Home in Garland and at other times at the home of Hazel Chadwick, 317 Woodlief Dr. Elizabethtown, NC.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to White Lake Baptist Church, 1879 White Lake Dr. PMB 7194, Elizabethtown, NC 28337.
