Stephen Matthew Gatyas, III, 54, of Leland, NC, and formerly of Wilmington, NC, and Phoenix, AZ, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2022, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen M. Gatyas, Jr., Peggy Davis, and James “Bo” Davis.
Stephen is survived by three sisters, Caro Davis of Hampstead, NC, Laura Gatyas Peterson (Marcus) of Garland, NC, and Tracy Gatyas Canady of Garland, NC; one brother, Jim Davis of Wilmington, NC, and his significant other, Jeanne Marie Meadows of Leland, NC. Stephen is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Stephen was born in Fayetteville, NC, on April 19, 1968, and later moved to Wilmington, NC, where he attended E.A. Laney High School. In his younger years, Stephen was an avid surfer and worked as a lifeguard in Carolina Beach. He was also extremely skilled at woodworking. Later, when he relocated to Phoenix, AZ, he was the owner and operator of Busy Bee, a commercial and residential bee removal company. Upon returning to North Carolina, Stephen continued with his interest in woodworking and spending time with family and friends. Stephen had a very big heart and a strong belief in God. He assisted many of his friends during their time of need. He would often reach out to people just to check on them and see how they were doing if they were having a difficult time, offering support and guidance.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. at Parkersburg Baptist Church Cemetery, located at 190 Reeves Road, Garland, NC. Pastor Carey Horrell will lead the service. Immediately following the service, lunch will be provided in the church fellowship hall. Parking will be available in the church parking lot.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ocean Cure, 607 N. Lake Park Blvd, Carolina Beach, NC 28428, in the name of Stephen Gatyas. The goal of this non-profit is “to improve the quality of life for people with challenges and disabilities” by providing them with access to the beach and various beach activities including surfing and paddle boarding.
