Sidney Erwin Murphy

Sidney “Erwin” Murphy, affectionately known as Erwin, was the eldest child of Norman and Lizzie Murphy, born on July 6, 1968. On Sunday, December 22, 2024, Erwin transitioned peacefully from this life.

Erwin was a remarkable individual with special needs who found joy in the simplest pleasures of life. His love for watching cartoons and flipping through magazines brought him endless delight, but his true passion was food. Although he spoke very few words, his eyes would light up, and his smile would brighten whenever he encountered his favorite dishes. Food brought him unmatched happiness and connection.

He spent much of his life in group home placements, including Howell Child Care Center and Community Innovations. In September 2023, Erwin became a resident of the Elizabethtown Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center/Nursing Home, where he would later share a room with his father. This special arrangement deepened the bond between father and son, making their time together even more meaningful. Above all, Erwin’s greatest joy was seeing his parents every day. He was showered with love and attention by his parents, leaving him feeling truly cherished.

Erwin was preceded in death by his grandparents: James D. Newkirk, Laura D. Newkirk, Norman B. Murphy, and Georgianna Murphy.

He is lovingly remembered by his devoted parents, Norman and Lizzie Murphy, who supported him unwaveringly throughout his life. His cherished siblings include his sister, Veronica A. Murphy of Pikeville, NC, and his brothers, Pedro D. Murphy (Tarsha) of Wilmington, NC, and Carlo N. Murphy (Fox) of Fayetteville, NC. Erwin also leaves behind a host of beloved nieces, great-nieces, nephews, four aunts, one uncle, and numerous cousins.

Erwin’s life was a testament to finding joy in the simple things and sharing love with those around him. His memory will be deeply treasured by all who knew and loved him.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Sunday, December 29, 2024, at Murphy’s Chapel AME Zion Church, 6250 NC Hwy 210 E., Harrells, NC. Interment to follow the service in the church cemetery. Reverend Dennis Funderburk will be officiating the service.

A Public Viewing will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024, from 1:00-6:00 PM, at Carter Funeral Home, 111 N. Ingold Ave., Garland, NC.
