Sadie Jerlene (Thomas) Melvin

Ms. Sadie Jerlene Melvin, 84, of 208 Mercer Mill Rd. departed this life for her forever home in Heaven on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at Elizabethtown Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Elizabethtown.

Born to Willie and Sophie Thomas on January 27, 1937.  She was the fourth out of five children, three preceded her in death, Johnny Elbert Thomas, Willie Mae Autry, and Virginia Autry. Sadie received her high school education from Bladen Central High School in Elizabethtown, NC.  As a young adult she married JC Melvin and eventually moved to Washington, DC with her family where she studied Cosmetology and pursue a career as a beautician, later landing a job with the DC Govt.  Ultimately retiring and moving back to her home town of Elizabethtown.

Sadie was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Peter’s A.M.E. Zion Church until her health declined.  She served as a Deaconess, Class Leader, Conference worker, Home Mission, and Kitchen Committee.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at St. Peter’s A.M.E. Zion Church, by Pastor Pam Faison.  Burial will follow in the Marshburn Cemetery.

Ms. Melvin leaves to cherish her memories three children, Ricky Melvin (Joann), Theresa Sylver (Marvin), and Gregory Melvin (Carol), one sister, Catherine Autry, 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A public viewing will be held on Monday, October 18, 2021, from 1:00 P.M.-6:00 P.M. with family present from 4:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M. at Carter Funeral Home in Garland.
