Mrs. Ruby Mae Hairr, 83, of 23 Hawk Dr., Harrells, NC, passed away Sunday, February 07, 2021 at Elizabethtown Nursing Center, Elizabethtown, NC.

Ruby was born August 09, 1937 in Bladen County, NC to the late David & Janie Baker. She is preceded in death by her husband Arnold Hairr, one son: Ronnie Barnes, two brothers: David Baker & Terry Baker. Mrs. Hairr was retired from a career in food service with the public school system.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, February 11, 2021 at Paul Barnes Cemetery, Peter Cromartie Road, Garland.

Ruby leaves to cherish her memory her daughter: Paula Barnes Smith of Elizabethtown, NC, her son: Paul Williams Barnes, Jr. and wife Denise of Mooresville, NC, one sister: Kay Baker Strickland and husband Roger of Elizabethtown, NC, eight grandchildren: Jeffrey Smith of Elizabethtown, NC, Dalton Smith and wife Krishna of Garland, NC, Ethan Barnes of Charleston, SC, Grayson Barnes Cross and husband Zach of Tucker, GA, Cameron Barnes of Mooresville, NC, Ronnie Barnes II of Elizabethtown, NC, McKinley & Scarlett Barnes of Elizabethtown, NC and three great grandchildren: Aubree, Addy and Waylon Smith all of Garland, NC.

Ruby loved Jesus first, her family second, and then anyone she met, everywhere!  She truly never met a stranger.  Once you met her, you never forgot her and she immediately considered you to be her friend.  She had many dear friends and valued those friendships beyond measure.  The opportunity she had working in the “lunchroom” in Elizabethtown brought her some of life’s greatest joy and satisfaction.  She loved making a difference in the lives of all of the students, teachers, and staff.  She defined the term “people person” and always had a kind word, big smile, and even bigger hug for everyone.

Ruby overcame many obstacles and trials in her life but she had a relentless spirit of joy and gratitude at all times.  This was her witness of God’s peace and love for all.  Her children were secure and blessed in her unwavering love and support.  Her heart was also overflowing with love and pride for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Her role of “Granny” was her most prized role, so much so that she became “Granny” to everyone she met.

Our lives and those she touched and met along her journey are forever blessed and changed by having known her and being loved by her. “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.  Honor her for all that her hands have done and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.”  Proverbs 30-31.
