Mrs. Mary Magdalene Johnson Herring

Mary Magdalene Herring was second of five children
born to George A. and Sadie L. Johnson on January 22,1930 in Delway, North Carolina. Mary affectionately known to relatives and close friends as Mag or Magdalene was educated in Sampson County, North Carolina Public Schools. She migrated to the North East area to seek a better life. In earlier years she provided for herself working in the Industrial Industry and small self owned businesses. Later she changed fields and worked part time as an administrative assistant/secretary with NYC Board of Education until her retirement. Youthful Mary married her husband Cassell Herring and together they
shared a life of love and commitment until his departure from this earth in 1977. They were proud and loyal members of Eastern Star Organization in Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY. Mary loved reading and was gifted with sewing, knitting, crocheting and growing plants. Mary loved the Lord and always had a strong belief in the power of prayer. She was always concerned about her family and extended a
helping hand wherever she saw need. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Mary peacefully left this world on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Brooklyn Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Emma Louise, Miley Elizabeth and two brothers, Leander and Birst Efferson.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Carter Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Garland Community Cemetery.

She leaves to mourn: two daughters, Maryetta Campbell; son-in-law,Steven T. Campbell, Sr. of NYC, Bunny Lynn Herring of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Gwendolyn Gayles, NJ (husband Antoine Gayles), Steven T. Campbell, Jr., NY, Jerome S. Herring, NY and Knatasha N. Herring, NC; nine great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
