Mr. Alex "Pete" Caviness

d. August 20, 2014

Mr. Alex Pete Caviness 92 of 8264 US Hwy. 701 N., died Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at Elizabethtown Nursing Center in Elizabethtown, NC. Alex was a hard worker starting as a young child throughout his life until his health no longer permitted. He worked numerous jobs and did whatever necessary to take care of his family and assist others in need. His many jobs included pulp wooding, truck driving, and farm labor, landscaping, and retired at Cape Fear Tire. Neither retirement nor age stopped his desire to be out and work as much as possible. He never met a stranger and extended himself to help others. Giving was a passion that he demonstrated throughout his life. He never found it a burden to visit the sick or give a ride to a person stranded on the road. He was known for his meek, calm, and humble personality. Many years ago, Alex joined St Peters AME Zion Church and found his calling as the Preacher Steward and Trustee. He took pride in maintaining the church, its grounds, associated facilities and assisting the Pastor as long as his health allowed. He served as the church local Lay Council President and looked forward to attending and supporting District meetings and functions. He was local church representative for the Interdenominational Ushers Association for many years and attended faithfully. Alex was preceded in death by his wife of more than 60 years Elsie Jane McDuffie and son Johnny Wayne. Funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Saint Peters A.M. E. Zion Church, by the Reverend Arnold Peterson. Burial will follow in the Marshburn Cemetery. Mr. Caviness is survived by, two sons, Ronald(Pam) and Gordon, Durham, NC; two daughters, Vivian Wiggins, Raleigh, NC and Shelia Branyon (George), Summerville, SC; six grandchildren, Nathan, Demarius, Nicole, Cavin Ward, Christian and Crystal; three great grandchildren; one sister: Daisy Brown, NY; one brother, Leroy Ray.
