Gene was born on April 16, 1952 in Bladen County to the late Willie David Morgan and Emmaline Marshburn. He is preceded in death by his sister Loutricia Faircloth.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 47 years Darlene Morgan, son Scottie Morgan and wife Lori of Garland, Daughter Melissa Lugenbell and husband Dwayne of Dublin, 5 grandchildren Jaya Howell, Emily Morgan, Madilyn Hall, Cylee Lugenbell, Zachary Morgan.
Gene was an active member of Hickory Grove Volunteer Fire Department for 36 years. He was a charter member and served in many roles including Assistant Chief, Captain, Safety Officer and Board of Directors President. Gene was proud to serve his community as a firefighter and loved spending time with his fire family. Gene received the First Responder of the year award in 2014. Gene loved to help mold new firefighters and watch them grow in the fire service.
Gene retired from NCDOT. He enjoyed his time there and would often tell stories about those times. He remained close with many of his coworkers.
Gene loved to hunt and fish and the friends he shared those memories with. Gene’s greatest joy was his grandchildren. He spent many hours creating special memories with each of them that they will always cherish. Nothing gave him greater joy than having all his grandchildren together.
The family would like to say a special “Thank You” to Nurse Amy and Yvonne for their assistance during the last few weeks.
Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday August 23, 2020 at Riverside Baptist Church Fellowship Center, 5043 NC Hwy. 210 East, Harrells. Interment to follow at Riverside Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Carter Funeral Home in Garland from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM and other times at the home of Scottie and Lori Morgan, 15813 US 701 N., Garland, NC 28441.
