Gene Marshall Hart, Sr. died Wednesday, May 2 in New Hanover regional Medical Center. He was born April 22, 1929 in Craven County to Fred and Gracie Jarman Hart. He was the second oldest of seven children. Mr. Hart was educated at Wheat Swamp High School and East Carolina University, where he met the love of his life and wife of 65 years, Dorothy Cain. He was a member of the United States Marine Corp during the Korean conflict. After military service Mr. Hart became an educator in Craven county and served as a principal until 1960 when he moved to Garland and became a business owner. In 1979 he returned to education which was what he felt was his calling. During his tenure with Sampson County school system he served as a principal and central office administrator. He was a member of the Sampson County Board of Education for sixteen years and was active throughout his life in the teaching and mentoring of young people. As a member of Garland Baptist Church he served as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School teacher and choir director as well as many other positions. He leaves behind a legacy of a life given to the service of others through the public education system, his community, many civic organizations and most of all his service to his church and his savior.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Dorothy. In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Katie Hart Aycock, and a brother Billy Hart. He is survived by his daughter Lynn Register and her husband Tim of Garland, his son Gene Marshall Hart, Jr. and his wife Kimberli of Nashville, TN, grandchildren, Matthew Register and his wife Jessica, Gene Marshall Hart, III and his wife Eleni, Caroline Hart, Brooke Jordan and her husband Josh, Brittani Boyd and her husband Tyler and William Ezell. He is also survived by his three adorable great grandchildren Taylor Grace, Nash and Harrison Register as well as two “adopted grandchildren, Scott Cain and wife Audrey and Brooke Cain.
He is also survived by two sisters, Bertie Laura Aycock and Peggy Rouse and husband Frank of Kinston as well as two brothers, Fred Hart and wife Joyce of Charlotte and Duffy Hart and wife Judy of Kinston.
He was a devoted husband and father, and friend, counselor mentor and example to everyone he met. Saying that he will be missed seems inadequate, but he will be missed.
The family will receive friends at Garland Baptist Church from 6:00P.M.-8:00P.M. Friday, May4th and other times at the home of Lynn and Tim Register. A memorial service will be held at Garland Baptist Church on Saturday, May 5th at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Ed Rouse and Rev. Tim Register conducting the service.
